An event dedicated to International Human Rights Day was held

The Azerbaijani Ombudsman, Sabina Aliyeva, and the United Nations Office in Azerbaijan jointly organized an event dedicated to December 10 – International Human Rights Day.

Underscoring the significance of today’s event during his speech, Aydın Safikhanli, Head of the Ombudsman Office, highlighted the UDHR’s importance in the development, promotion, and protection of human rights and freedoms, briefing also about broad relevant reforms implemented in Azerbaijan.

He said that many of the rights and freedoms enshrined in the Declaration have been incorporated into the constitutions of numerous countries around the world, including the Constitution of Azerbaijan, and that a national legislative framework has been developed based on these principles. It was stated that the armed conflicts, genocides, and the double standards emerging worldwide impede effective implementation of the Declaration and other international documents.

A. Safikhanli noted that under President Ilham Aliyev’s leadership, Azerbaijan liberated its occupied lands, enabled the return of displaced citizens, and restored their rights. He also highlighted the country’s ongoing efforts to promote regional and global peace and implement UN resolutions.

Kanako Mabuchi, Head of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, and Shahmar Mammadov, Deputy Chairman of the Bar Association, spoke at the event about measures taken in Azerbaijan to promote and protect human rights and freedoms, highlighting the implementation of the UDHR in the country.”

Next, video messages dedicated to International Human Rights Day from UN Secretary-General António Guterres and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk were presented.

A unique ‘Fibonacci’ intellectual game dedicated to this day was also held.

Overall, the winners of both the journalistic writing and children’s drawing competitions announced by the Azerbaijani Ombudsman were also awarded.
