A representative of the Ombudsman Office participated in the event dedicated to the issue of cluster munitions

Mugalib Mahmudov, Head of the Legal Education Unit at the Office of the Ombudspersonç delivered a speech at a roundtable held as a part of the project "Study of the Problem of Cluster Munitions in the Republic of Azerbaijan." The event had brought together deputies of the Parliament, the Mine Action Agency, other relevant state bodies, and representatives of several civil society organizations (SCOs).

Speaking at the event, a representative of the ombuds office stated that Armenia’s long-term contamination of territories of Azerbaijan with mines and other unexploded ordnance, including cluster munitions, has led to a gross violation of  fundamental rights of the civilians.

It was reported that Ombudsperson Sabina Aliyeva, who constantly keeps this issue in focus, exposes Armenia’s mine terror in statements, appeals, and reports addressed to international and regional organizations, demanding the urgent submission of accurate maps of the minefields to Azerbaijan. In the special report prepared on this issue titled “The Mine Problem in the Liberated Territories,” Armenia’s war crimes committed against our country are presented with legal and factual evidence.

It was emphasized that, for various reasons, necessary steps are being taken by the ombuds institution within the framework of an independent monitoring mechanism to promote, protect, and ensure the rights of persons with disabilities, including landmine victims. Effective cooperation is carried out with relevant state bodies, international organizations, and SCOs to strengthen their social and legal protection.

Interactive discussions were held at the event, and the report prepared in Azerbaijani and English within the framework of the project was presented to the participants.
