
As part of the "Human Rights Month" announced by the Ombudsman of Azerbaijan, Sabina Aliyeva, an event was organized at the SBS Academy jointly with the Ombudsman Office and the State Border Service (SBS). Major General Ramin Bagirov, Head of the Academy, Aydin Safikhanli, Head of the Ombudsman Office, Mugalib Mahmudov, Head of the Legal Education Unit, faculty and cadets took part in the event.
In his speech, A. Safikhanli, stated that the first state program on the protection of human rights was approved in Azerbaijan on 18 June 1998, by National Leader Heydar Aliyev. He also mentioned that complex reforms were implemented to protect human rights, and that June 18 was designated as Human Rights Day in the Republic of Azerbaijan by the Decree of June 18, 2007, which was issued by President Ilham Aliyev, who successfully carried out and expanded this policy.
It was also stressed that the Ombudsman, traditionally proclaims May 18–June 18 as "Human Rights Month" on the eve of this important day each year. The events that take place during the Month are especially important, and the capital and regions host educational events on a variety of topical topics that promote human rights.
Following that, the attendees were given presentations on current international treaties and national laws, and an interactive debate was held. During the talks, the participants' questions were ansüered and significant subjects such the State Security Service's efforts to protect human rights, guidelines for dealing with detainees, and procedures for appealing to the Ombudsman were discussed.
